Work quickly if warm to avoid spoilage.
- Salt the flesh side of the skin with fine grade non- iodized table salt. Be careful to cover all parts of the skin. The salting step is important as it helps set the hair and draws out liquids and soluble proteins to begin the tanning process. Fold the skin and place on a inclined surface to drain. Let sit for 24 hours. Shake off salt, re-salt and let sit another 24 hours.
- Shake off excess salt. Rehydrate the skin by soaking in a bath of 1 lbs . salt to every one gallon of water. Soak skin only long enough until it is soft and pliable. One capful of liquid Lysol per gallon of water can be used as a bactericide if weather is exceptionally warm. DO NOT PLACE ANY SKINS IN WARM OR HOT WATER. DO NOT LEAVE SKINS IN WATER LONGER THAN NECESSARY.
- Remove skin from solution, drain well and thin as well as possible using a sharp knife or fleshing tool. This is most important on thicker hides such as beaver, deer, moose , etc.
- Wash skin in cool water. Greasy skins such as raccoon, bear and beaver should now be degreased by washing in a solution of water and liquid dish detergent. Do not leave skin in solution for too long.
- Rinse and drain skin well. Make sure all salt and detergent is removed. Use a towel to remove as much moisture from both the skin and hair sides as possible. This will help eliminate any hair slippage problems and allow the tanning solution to penetrate the entire flesh side of skin.
- Rub tanning solution well into all areas of skin using a paint brush or by hand wearing rubber gloves.
- Fold skin flesh side in and let sit overnight for at least 12 hours. After 12 hours open skin, wipe off any excess tanning formula and hang skin flesh side out to dry for a couple of days. As skin is drying periodically stretch and work skin by hand until completely dry and soft.
- To further soften, skin can be worked back and forth over a dull edge such as a rounded piece of 1/2" thick wood, table edge, etc. Tanned skin may also be finished further by lightly sanding with coarse sandpaper.
